Film Festival Stars - Best Actress Monica Bellucci
ROME | That Meryl Streep, Monica Bellucci and Stefania Sandrelli are among the stars expected at at Rome’s fourth annual film festival should come as no surprise: this year’s fest has already garnered a reputation as the “women’s festival” for its emphasis on female protagonists.
“It happened by chance,” said Piera Detassis, the festival’s artistic director. “It was a nice surprise.”
Though the most anticipated screening at this year’s festival which runs from Oct. 15 to 23, may be “New Moon,” the new installment in the Twilight saga, a handful of films are taking up the hefty question of women’s rights, including “Sea Purple, a lesbian love story set in Sicily, and “Every Day is a Holiday,” a French film about three women on Independence Day in Lebanon.
Together with “Up in the Air,” starring George Clooney, and “Triage,” with Colin Farrell, they join 14 films from around the world competing for the Best Movie award. You can see so many famous best actress in film festival.
Italian films will be subtitled in English, but unless you can speak Chinese, French, German and so on, you may have trouble following some of the more exotic films subtitled only in Italian. But there will also be plenty of out-of-competition films screening in English, including the hit “Julie & Julia,” with Streep, Joel and Ethan Coen’s ”A Serious Man’,’ and James Ivory’s “The City of Your Final Destination,” with Anthony Hopkins.
English speakers can also choose from several films aimed at under-18s, documentaries, short films and tributes — most notably to Heath Ledger, with screenings of “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” his final film, and unfinished productions he made as a director. The festival closes with Franco Zeffirelli’s tribute to Rome, featuring Monica Bellucci and Andrea Boccelli’s interpretation of “Tosca.This year we are doing things differently there will be a balance between large and small scale productions,” the director Piera Detassi said. Last year was more about a dazzling red carpet but a competition orientated around more niche films.”
Auditorium Parco Della Musica is the festival’s main site, and is an impressive building itself worth seeing, on its own.
